Zitat:
You will need a set of L shaped Torx (27/30), 10 ratchet, flat blade screwdriver and 2 X 1mm thick washers, beer.
Don't do this is you are not handy with the spanners as although the mod is simple, it is very fiddly.
Remove the plastic engine cover using the 10mm ratchet.
At the front of the engine mounted just above the turbo is the wastegate actuator. It is the brass coloured disk shaped thing with a small hose hanging down and a rod running across to the exhaust side of the turbo.
The principle is simple. As the air pressure increases with engine speed and exhaust flow, air from the compressor side of the turbo pushes up the little pipe into the actuator. This then pushes the rod from left to right and opens the wastegate, reducing the exhaust gas pressure and stopping the air pressure increasing any more. This kicks in at about 10psi at 4000 RPM I beleive but don't quote me on that.
By moving the actuator 1mm to the left, more pressure is required to push the rod that extra distance hence the turbo is allowed to keep on spinning up and producing more pressure, (est 12-14psi).
Undo the two torx bolts holding the actuator bracket to the turbo casting. Leave one in but completely remove the other. Make sure you are using exactly the right size Torx and apply pressure on it as you turn. If you slip you will knacker the nut and the tool. You will probably need to use some sort of extension bar on the Torx to get leverage as these bolts are tight.
Tip: put plenty of rag or tissure underneath and around the area you are working on to stop any bolts/tools that you drop from dissapearing forever down the front of the engine. I spent 3 hours with my hand shoved up the bottom of the engine.
Magnetize the tip of a flat blade screwdriver by holding against a magnet for a while and stick the washer on the end. Hold the actuator with your hand and pull it to the left to create a gap between the bracket and the casting and gently place the washer in the gap. Wiggle the bolt back in and turn it in a couple of turns. Repeat with the other bolt then tighten both up. Replace the cover and have a beer.
If you attempt to do this when the turbo is still hot be prepared to get third degree burns and lacerations.
What it will do is give it a fair bit extra torque in the midrange and where the acceleration would normally start to curve off, you have a bit more.
Personally I found it very worthwhile and has given the Copen a bit more of an edge. My dealer said it won't invalidate the warrant as the engine can take a lot more pressure and the modification is subtle so will not be noticed.
