Charade TD white smoke, loss of power

Hello everyone!

Hope you don't mind that I write in english! I'm from hungary, and I'm an abolute Daihatsu fan!

One year ago I bought a 1993 Charade TD 1.0, the limited edition (full of extras, as it was the last few cars from the old series). Everything was fine with it, and I fell in love with the little monster! But a few months ago it started to smoke heavily, and it's not accelerating as it used to. Although the 4-5 litre consuption is still fine in the city, but I'm getting a little worried about it. Some mechaninc said it could be the turbo, another one said it could be the cylinder rings. I use Shell 10W40 oil in it. It starts fine, runs smoothly, does not owerheat, although the exhaust has a little puffing noise in it. Maybe it could be the Catalisator?

Please help me! Maybe you ran across a problem like mine before...

Hi @levidrugi

I am not quite sure about the abbreviation "TD". Does it stand for Turbo Diesel? Might it be that you have one of these rare Diesel engines in it?

If so then forget about the catalic converter since this only applies to gasoline driven engines.

However, should your Dai have a Diesel engine then you might use the search function since there were some issues with Diesel engines of your model in the past.

Cheers, Inday

Thanks for the reply!

It has a 0,993 litre turbo-diesel engine with catalisator! I'm absolutely sure about that!

I've tried searching, but with no luck yet.

what's gasket? the ring around the cylinder?

Inday 22.06.2005 11:19

Does the engine consume cooling fluid? I mean, do you have to add some liquid now and then?

Cheers, Inday

levidrugi 22.06.2005 11:22

yes, about half a litre every week

Inday 22.06.2005 11:30

As I can remember, this was a common problem with these type of engines. But I can't come to think of it what technical problem it was. The head gaskets? I guess so.

Have it checked at a Dai dealer, they will tell you how much it will be then.

Cheers, Inday

BTW I don't know why you say it's such a rare car, in the city where I live in Hungary (pop.: 200 000) there are at least 20 cars like this (0.993 litre turbo diesel, well not the 1993 version, I own the only one :) (the dealer in austria said that this car was in the last 50 produced of the g101)

i´ve never seen a G101 with CL61 engine with Cat in my whole life, and belive ma, i´ve seen alot of them....

I think your turbo is gone, have checked the shaftplay already???

I'm in Pécs, near the Croatian border, about 340 kms from sopron

Believe me, it has a Cat. I'll take some photos of the engine in the afternoon.

They didn't check anything. I took it to 3 diesel-specialist, the first said that it's simply old (12 years and 140 000 kms), the second said it's the turbo, and the third said it's a cylinder gasket. None of them even touched the car, none of them took any measurements, or anything.

BTW, how much would it cost to replace all cylinder gaskets?

Hey, that sound familiar with me. Our autoshops don't like to touch old cars with many kms either, they rather like to sell you a new showroom car.

I hadn't known that the situation is the same in Hungary as it is in Switzerland. :/

You might try again to take it in to another and smaller garage. They are rather helpful than the big autoshops; and sometimes they even do better and more reliable work.

Don't loose hope, insist with your problem in other garages. Was a qualified Daihatsu autoshop already investigating on it?

Cheers, Inday

:) And belive me, i ´ve never seen one (and i worked over 10 years as daiahatsu mechanic !)

Anyway, the CL61 engibe is not the very best engine from daih.

Some known errors:

turbo failed (check the shaftplay) it´s from Aisin, not repairable....
pisten no. 2 died because of heating troubles
crakced head some reasen as above

thanks for the quotes guys!

What are the signs if the turbo fails? I'm really worried, that the turbo may cause the problem!

I'll be back with some photos in the afternoon.

Inday 22.06.2005 13:13

I guess, when you remove the catalic converter, your engine runs well again :D :D :D (just teasing you!)

Cheers Inday
